Wife accused of stealing SAPS stamps while husband is charged for drunken driving

The woman's mother-in-law was later also arrested for obstructing police duties

The wife of an alleged drunk driver had been arrested by Sebenza SAPS after allegedly stealing police stamps at the station while her husband was in custody on Friday evening.

Her mother was later also taken into custody for obstructing police duties.

According to Sebenza SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso, officers were patrolling the area as part of Operation Buya Mtheto and arrested a male who was apparently driving under the influence of alcohol.

The man became aggressive after being taken into custody.

“The police asked for his information and called his wife (42) to the police station to get further details on the man as they could not talk to him. The police had not charged the man yet but kept him in custody because he was still under the influence of alcohol,” Tsotsotso said.

After the woman had  left the station the police realised police stamps that were in the room she was waiting in were missing.

Tsotsotso said officers went to her home in Edenvale where a 62-year-old woman denied them entry. The police used light force to enter the premises and found the woman who was at the station earlier that night, as well as the police stamps.

The woman was charged with theft of state property and the older woman, who is her mother-in-law, was charged with obstruction of police duties.
