WATCH: Fire engulfs Avion Park Bowls Club’s lapa
'We could've helped if we had running water,' an eyewitness said
“Jojo, there’s a fire in the lapa!”
These words had Avion Park Bowling Club’s manager Jojo van Dyk running to the scene on Friday afternoon.
There, he was met with multiple flames, which had started to engulf the grass roof of the glass-enclosed lapa overlooking the bowling lawns.
“We had no municipal water to put out the fire,” he told Express telephonically. Luckily, the club had fire extinguishers handy.
“We called the gym next door, which sent over guys trained for such emergencies,” he added.
According to an eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, the fire started at around noon. “Kempton Park Fire Brigade was here within ten minutes with their own water supply,” he said.
“If we had running water we could’ve stopped the incident much sooner.”
It is not yet clear what started the fire. No one was hurt during the incident.
