Operations at OR Tambo back to normal after early morning power dip

Of the 20 flights scheduled to depart between 6am and 7am, 18 left on time

Management of OR Tambo International Airport confirms that a power dip early this morning affected services and processes at the airport for about two hours.

Airport spokesperson Leigh Gunkel-Keuler says the power dip happened at about 5.10am. Areas affected included the parking system, baggage system, people movers such as escalators and telephone lines.

“The airport’s contingency plan kicked into operation. Technicians restored power in full by about 6.45am. Of the 20 flights scheduled to depart between 6am and 7am, 18 left on time and two were slightly delayed. The delays were due to a hangar repositioning in one instance and baggage issues in the other,” she said.

“Airport operations are now running normally,” said Gunkel-Keuler.
