Local church takes action against Litter and blocked drains in CBD

The Church of Pentecost SA recently conducted a community clean-up campaign to tackle visible dumping, litter and blocked drains in the Kempton Park CBD.

The campaign ran from 10:00 to 12:30 in the pilot area, where 20 church members volunteered through the programme to take part.

Volunteers focused on hotspots along Kempton Road, Greyilla Avenue, Casuarina Street and Maxwell Road.

Waste collected included general refuse such as food, paper and plastic, alongside soil erosion and compost waste.

According to organiser Sfiso Mkhize, the initiative aimed to protect community health, improve the CBD and model responsible behaviour.

He said the intended outcomes are cleaner spaces, better habits and stronger partnerships with the community, municipality and local traders.

Members expressed joy at being part of the solution, noting that despite recurring dumping, limited infrastructure and coordination gaps, the action raised visibility and awareness to improve waste management.

The campaign reflects the church’s values of service, stewardship, accountability and care for neighbours in practice. Described as Programme Genesis in action, the initiative marks a practical step toward becoming a trusted community church.

The church plans to run the campaign monthly, with the next clean-up scheduled for October 17.
Members said lasting change requires consistency, education, effective collection systems and active partnerships.

The message to the community is that clean streets are everyone’s responsibility, and together with the community, municipality and business owners, the environment can be sustained for the next generation.
