A 90-year-old woman was robbed in the parking area of Birchgate Shopping Centre on Kwartel Street on Monday.
According to Capt Lesibana Molokomme, spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, the woman and an employee were held at gunpoint around 10.30am by two men.
They took the pensioner’s handbag and the employee’s briefcase.
The employee called security for help. Sector police members, with the help of security companies and community members, responded to the armed robbery and managed to arrest the two suspects
The sector police who chased the suspects found them hiding behind a nearby tyre company.
It is alleged that one of the suspects was armed with a 9mm pistol. The serial number was filed off and one magazine with five live rounds of ammunition was found. The stolen items were also recovered.
“The arrested suspects, aged 24 and 36, will face charges of armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said Molokomme.
