Norkem Park granny’s drain overflows with other people’s mess

Items flooding from her drain include toilet paper, tampons, stockings and pieces of cloth.

A Norkem Park grandmother was left dispirited after her home’s drain overflowed with items from external drains for the third time this year on Saturday.

“I’ve called the municipality multiple times, but nothing has been done,” Drien Pelser (77) told Express.

Items that overflowed from her drain included toilet paper, tampons, stockings and pieces of cloth.

When Express visited her home on Tenkwa Street on Wednesday, toilet paper stains were still on the tiles surrounding the drain.

Pelser has found tampons, stockings and many more unwelcome items in her drain. She and an employee cleaned the overflow themselves, after no feedback from the municipality.

“A worker and I tried to clean up the mess. I felt so shy for him to see it, but he was so eager to help,” Pelser said.

To make matters worse, she cannot use the water in her own home. “When I flush my toilet, the water level rises and more items come flowing out.”

“I don’t want to be a bother,” Pelser added, “but I don’t know what to do anymore. I don’t cry easily, but today I cried.”

Clr Desmond Mackenzie told Express he spoke to Pelser about the issue. “I’ve lodged a complaint with the necessary officials and will keep her posted.”

Pelser shows how toilet paper in the overflowing water has stained her tiles. This is the third time that her drain has overflowed with items from an external drain.
