Ekurhuleni distances itself from bogus chainsaw tender

An investigation is currently ongoing to establish if there is any involvement of the City’s officials in this scam

The City of Ekurhuleni has distanced itself from a bogus chainsaw motorised vehicle tender, scamming people of their hard-earned monies.

The culprits send possible victims an appointment letter bearing the City of Ekurhuleni logo, together with the fraudulently generated order number for bidders to bid to supply chainsaws to the city for 12 months.

The victims are thereafter given specific specs of the chainsaw motorised vehicle that is only available from one service provider and are requested to deposit a certain amount of money.

This is a scam and the city distances itself from it. An investigation is currently ongoing to establish if there is any involvement of the city’s officials in this scam, said Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro.

Entrepreneurs are encouraged to be aware of the unauthorised use of City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) name, email address, employee names and logos.

The fraudulent emails have some elements of similarities to the CoE email. for example: name.surname@ekurhuleni-gov.org.

The difference is:

• SCAM: …@Ekurhuleni–gov.org

• Correct email: …@ekurhuleni.gov.za

To confirm if quotations or tenders are authentic, contact details are available on the City’s website on www.ekurhuleni.gov.za or alternatively bidders may contact Hannes.vSchalkwyk@ekurhuleni.gov.za or Siphokazi.Xokozela@ekurhuleni.gov.za.

Report fraud and corruption to the CoE anonymous anti-fraud hotline on 0800 102 201 or email ethicsinfo@ekurhuleni.gov.za.
