On September 12 a suspect appeared in Tembisa Magistrate’s Court for lying about a hijacking of his car.
Rabie Ridge SAPS communications officer Captain Mofana Masela said the man opened a false hijacking case to evade paying for damages after an accident he had where he hit and damaged a palisade fence.
He said the African man was driving his Toyota Corolla along Republic Road at Austin View and while he was at a junction of Modderfontein Road, he wanted to turn left and there he knocked the palisade fence of a corner property.
“He then went to Rabie Ridge Police Station to open a hijacking case.
“The case was registered but he later came back to report that the car was found and he needed help for towing.
“Police became suspicious and they interrogated the so-called victim but he confessed that he hit the fence.
“He said he was trying to evade to pay for damages and he decided to report a hijacking,” said Masela.
The suspect was arrested and detained in the police cells.
“Rabie Ridge SAPS station commander Colonel Johana Ngoma is appealing to communities to stop this behaviour and take responsibilities for the damage they cause. Again the community must stop opening false cases because it is a criminal offence.
“It is a lesson to those who thought hiding criminal activities does pay,” Masela advised.
