Child welfare hosts heritage lunch

After the meal, the women were handed food parcels donated by Food Directions in Jet Park and Woolworths Food.

Child Welfare Kempton Park hosted a Heritage Day lunch for its clients at the centre on September 22.

Makha Thusi, director of Child Welfare Kempton Park, saw it would be a great idea to host the women they work with on a regular basis. These women are from Erasmus Informal Settlement in Bredell, Ga-Max Informal Settlement in Pomona and Kaalfontein Informal Settlement.

The women came to the lunch dressed in their traditional wear representing their cultures and learning about the cultures of others.

“This lunch is to take our minds away from our problems. Let’s have a merry moment and enjoy the food for today Let’s not talk about the problems we face daily,” said Thusi.

“Most of the women that are here are single, unemployed mothers. We are going to have skills development projects that will help you, including parenting skills, a sewing project, a gardening project and an early child development project. All these projects are available for you to take part in,” she continued.

Nomvula Mokgolobotho, a social worker at the welfare centre, prepared a heritage meal. Chicken Briyani was served with chakalaka and atchar.

After the meal, the women were handed food parcels donated by Food Directions in Jet Park and Woolworths Food.
