DA submits motion of no confidence in Ekurhuleni mayor

Critical services are barely functioning, waste is piling up on the streets and our people are demanding change - Phillip de Lange, DA

The DA in Ekurhuleni have requested a debate, and submitted a motion of no confidence in the executive mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina, following the “mass collapse of almost every level of service delivery”.

Clr Phillip de Lange, the DA caucus leader in Ekurhuleni, said the DA had been raising the plight of service delivery issues affecting the communities throughout the metro.

“From crisis to crisis, the ANC-led coalition continues to act irresponsibly and recklessly. Placing its own agenda ahead of those of communities in Ekurhuleni who rely on the metro. The vulnerable have been the most affected, not only at a national level where the governing party continue to stumble on but at a local level too,” De Lange said.

“Residents of Ekurhuleni continue to protest against Clr Masina’s led administration, demanding jobs, housing and service delivery. This clearly shows that residents have had enough. Critical services are barely functioning, waste is piling up on the streets, and our people are demanding change.

“Ekurhuleni is in crisis and we need to act now before the industrial power hub of Africa is no more. Bad planning and poor governance have resulted in a non-functioning municipality where ratepayers are still expected to pay their monthly municipal account for services hardly rendered.

“In addition, Clr Masina, at yesterday’s [September 27] council meeting, used his ANC majority to give him the power to expropriate land without compensation. Clearly showcasing his thirst for power,” said De Lange.

“In the interest of the people of Ekurhuleni, we, as the DA have brought a motion of no confidence against Clr Masina. We cannot continue to accept empty promises and corruption to occur at the expense of ratepayers and South Africans.

“The mayor has promised the establishment of a commission to fight fraud and corruption. Yet, Clr Masina continues to appoint characters with questionable integrity.”
