Three firearms recovered by flying squad
According to the Benoni Flying Squad communication officer, Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, the incident occurred at about 2pm when members responded to a radio call of SAPS Tactical Response Team members looking for a backup after spotting a silver Mercedes Benz on Republic Road that was used in a business robbery in Ivory Park.

Benoni Flying Squad members arrested one suspect and recovered two firearms while the metro police arrested another suspect with a rifle on August 27.
According to the Benoni Flying Squad communication officer, Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, the incident occurred around 2pm when members responded to a radio call of the SAPS Tactical Response Team members. They were looking for a backup after spotting a silver Mercedes Benz that was used in a business robbery on Republic Road in Ivory Park.
“Benoni Flying Squad and metro members joined in the chase until the vehicle came to a standstill next to the Thembakhoza squatter camp. The suspects fled. Members went in pursuit resulting in the arrest of two suspects and the seizure of two unlicensed 9mm pistols and R5 rifle,” said Giblin.
Giblin added that one of the pistols turned to have been reported stolen in Ivory Park in 2011.
“Investigation continues as members follow leads on the other suspects. Police members are taking pride in their job and always take into account the needs of the community,” said Giblin.
The suspects are expected to appear in the local magistrate’s court soon to face charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and a hijacked motor vehicle.
