The speaker of council has set an extra-ordinary council meeting for October 25 at which the DA’s motion of no confidence in the mayor will be debated.
Clr Phillip de Lange, the DA leader in Ekurhuleni, has welcomed Ald Patricia Kumalo’s decision to debate the party’s motion of no confidence in Clr Mzwandile Masina.

“This debate will allow us the opportunity to highlight the mayor’s failures, not only in governance but to the residents of Ekurhuleni too. Having lost the trust of the people and council, it is time for Clr Masina to be removed from his post,” said de Lange.
“The ongoing protests throughout Ekurhuleni show the increasing frustration in Clr Masina’s leadership and the communities are voicing their anger. At the recent council meeting, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department was called in to disperse protesters.
“These protesters are not alone. In fact, different groups of protesters have become a common sight outside Germiston Civic Centre, raising their frustrations and hoping for change. We respect people’s right to protest and understand the growing frustration in a failing government. For too long our communities have been subjected to a failing ANC-led government,” he added.
“The battle for access to real, long-term jobs, services and housing continues.
“As the DA, we have a comprehensive dossier highlighting the executive mayor’s failures and welcome the speaker’s approval to debate the motion. We are confident the councillors of Ekurhuleni, who were elected to serve the people, will vote with their conscience and put the residents first.
“We have been approached by roughly 25 ANC councillors who have committed to vote with us should a secret ballot be accepted,” said de Lange.
