Ebony Park teen (16) arrested for killing friend (17) with dead dad’s gun

The boys did not report the incident and hid the firearm under a couch

Ivory Park SAPS is investigating a murder case and how a 16-year-old teenager gained access to his late father’s firearm which he allegedly used to fatally shoot his friend.

The incident occurred on October 13 at about 10.30pm at his friend’s home in Ebony Park Phase One.

Njabulo Khumalo (17) was certified dead at Tembisa Hospital.

Tembisa South SAPS communications officer Capt Neldah Sekgobela said it was believed Khumalo was with two friends aged 16 and 19 years, playing with the firearm.

“It is belived the three were drinking alcohol when the incident happened. One of them pulled the trigger, resulting in a bullet striking Khumalo in his chest.

He was rushed to Tembisa Hospital but died on admission, according to Sekgobela.

Sekgobela added the duo hid the firearm under a couch.

“They didn’t report the matter to the police. The police were informed by hospital officials regarding the incident.

Sekgobela said the friends have been arrested and detained at Ivory Park SAPS.

She said the firearm used belonged to the 16-year-old boy’s father who worked at the Edenvale’s court as a police officer. He died in 2006.

The 16-year-old has been charged with the possession of an unlicensed firearm and murder while his friend is charged with murder, Sekgobela said.
