Alleged Birchleigh rapist arrested two hours after incident

The attack came after the woman said she wasn’t interested in the suspect.

A 23-year-old suspect was arrested on Friday for the alleged rape of a 30-year-old woman in Birchleigh.

According to Capt Lesibana Molokomme, spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, the woman was walking along Essenwood Avenue at around 10pm when the unknown man approached her.

“He showed interest in her and she refused to talk to him, saying she wasn’t interested,” Molokomme said.

According to Molokomme, the suspect then forcefully grabbed the woman, pushed her into a nearby veld and raped her.

“A passer-by, who knew the victim, witnessed the incident,” Molokomme added.

“The witness shouted to ask what was going on and the suspect ran from the scene.”

With the help of the witness, police managed to trace the suspect within two hours and arrest him.
