Residents of Brombeer Street in Terenure Extension 57 had been battling for months to have the bulk refuse containers at townhouse complexes emptied on a weekly basis.
Since February, the caretaker at one of the complexes had contacted the metro several times without much success.
They often have to wait two to three weeks for service, which leads to the containers overflowing.
Sometimes only some of the containers are emptied while others are left untouched. Black bags put next to full containers are also not removed.
“It seems like we are heading for another two-week stint and more health hazards, once again,” she said last week after rubbish was yet again not removed.
“We are now totally disgusted with this municipality, this is blatantly obnoxious.”
Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro, denied these allegations.
“The street referred to was scheduled for collection on that very day and it was serviced the same day. The City always ensures that all residents receive service at least once a week, which we’ve continued to do, irrespective of a scheduled day being skipped. We ensure that service is delivered within the same week, even if it is after hours.”
Gadebe also said all containers are serviced during collection.
When asked why refuse bags were left behind, he said: “There’s always an undertaking that whereby there’s been delayed service, all refuse will be removed, inclusive of the refuse bags.”
