Sebenza SAPS warns about these crimes

Residents urged to keep safe now that the festive season is approaching and crime is on the rise.

Robbery, car theft and theft from a vehicle have drastically increased in the Sebenza police precinct the past four months.

Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso, spokesperson for Sebenza SAPS, most victims were from Cresslawn, Croydon and Kempton Park West.

“Too many cases have been reported and they all seem to be similar,” said Tsotsotso.

She gave these tips for pedestrians to avoid being robbed:

1. Carry a small bag, not too visible.

2. Walk in groups, if not, use a taxi or Uber.

3. Do not carry a laptop bag.

4. Do not walk with your earphones in your ears.

“These are the main things that attract robbers when people are walking in the streets,” said Tsotsotso.

Motor vehicle theft and out of motor vehicle theft have also been reported at the station.

“People leave valuable things in sight in their cars, which attracts criminals. Many of these cases were reported in Cresslawn and Croydon,” said Tsotsotso.

Motorists are encouraged to leave their valuables out of sight, in the boot of their cars.

“Avoid parking outside of the yard at your home and keep your cars, gates and burglar gates locked at all times. Know your surroundings. When you see anyone suspicious in your area, call the police, CPF or a security company to be safe at all times.

“We believe the people committing these crimes are not from these areas. Crime is now on the rise as we approach the festive season and we want everybody to play a part in their own safety,” concluded Tsotsotso.
