One of the three men seen offloading goods suspected to have been stolen has been detained at the Ivory Park Police Station following a tip-off by a member of the public on November 1.
According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Capt Bernard Matimulane, the 30-year-old man from Ivory Park Extension 14 was seen in the early hours of November 1 offloading televisions and other items which the informant was not able to see.
“Convinced that the property may have been stolen, because of the time of the delivery, the member of the public rushed to the police station with all the necessary information. It was the police’s quick response that resulted in the recovery of three televisions, a cellphone and an iPad. The markings on the items showed it belongs to the Govan Mbeki Municipality in Mpumalanga.
“The suspect told police all the items found in his possession were stolen during a house break-in committed by himself and two of his friends in Leandra, Mpumalanga,” said Matimulane.
Matimulane added the police are still on the hunt for the suspect’s two friends, who also stay in Ivory Park.
The station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has welcomed the community’s involvement in assisting the police in fighting crime.
“The tip-off has resulted in the arrest of one suspect, recovery of stolen property and a clear example that if people are the extended eyes and ears of the police, fighting crime can be a walk in the park,” said Ngcobo.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court to face a charge of being in possession of suspected stolen property.
