Ward 12 celebrates heritage
According to the event organiser and parliamentary coordinator, Bongani Masina, the purpose of the event was to popularise cultures.
The ANC Kempton Park parliamentary constituency office (PCO), tasked with the mandate to ensure that the government delivers on its programmes, hosted a Heritage and Township Economy Tour event at Phomolong Sports Centre on October 13.
The constituency also monitors and assess development programmes.
According to the event organiser and parliamentary coordinator, Bongani Masina, the purpose of the event was to popularise cultures and to celebrate diversity.
The event was graced by Ward 12 councillor Clr Simon Kwili. He welcomed everyone present, including the head of Core Business National Heritage Council Dr Kagiso Maphalle, who spoke at length about the heritage landscape.
Various councillors, NGOs, NPOs, Tembisa Development Agency, cultural groups and members of the community, attended the occasion.
Masina said part of the event was also to celebrate cultures through African music and food.
“We anticipated 300 people would attend, but 236 people were in attendance and this, despite the cold and rainy weather, shows that people are hungry for such events. The PCO will in due course facilitate bi-annual heritage events as part of engaging with the communities,” said Masina.
He said cultures and heritage must be taken care of.
The management committee will finalise a draft for 2019 in early January to encapsulate youth development programmes that will address heritage and indigenous knowledge systems.
Tembisa Hospital choir, Moskito Group and Lebone Aids Project cultural group, entertained the crowd with music.
