
One suspect was arrested after five armed robbers held up staff at a store in Festival Mall early on Tuesday morning.
The men took an undisclosed number of cellphones from the store before fleeing.
According to Lee-Anne Da Silva, spokesperson for the centre, the armed men entered the Exact store at 9.10am and held up staff inside the store.
“No gunshots were fired and fortunately nobody was injured. One suspect was caught and police have the perpetrator in custody,” said Da Silva.
According to her a white H1 Hyundai with registration number BC 50 MM GP was used as a getaway vehicle.
“Centre management has video footage of the incident and is working closely with the police to apprehend the perpetrators. The safety and security of our tenants and shoppers remains our top priority.”
According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, an alert security officer noticed suspicious people carrying goods. As he called for back up the suspects ran out of the complex but one was arrested.
“A 7.65mm pistol as well as ammunition were found on the arrested suspect,” said Mtshali.
The 23-year-old man, believed to be from Soweto, will face charges of business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.
