A cash-in-transit heist occurred in Hospital View in Tembisa on Monday afternoon.
Col Brenda Muridili said the incident took place at about 6.30pm along Reverend RTJ Namane Drive.
“The money truck was collecting money from different places in Tembisa.
“After their last pick up the security guards heard gunshots and bullets hitting their truck.
“The truck lost control until it came to a standstill. An unknown man opened the door and disarmed one of the security guards,” said Muridili.
She said the security guard later realised that the truck was blown up for the suspects to gain access into their vehicle.
Muridili said an undisclosed amount of cash was taken and no arrests had been made yet. Spectators were seen picking up money after the heist.
She said a case of cash-in-transit robbery had been opened and the case will be handed over to Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).
Muridili said no one was injured during the heist but she advised the community not to pick up the money scattered during the incident.
“It is a crime and members of the community could find themselves in trouble. Remember, the money has serial numbers and people caught with the notes would be expected to explain where they got it from,” said Muridili.
