A suspect was killed during an attempted hijacking in Kempton Park CBD on Monday night.
The suspect was among three others who had attempted to hijack a victim on Maxwell Street.
“It is alleged that the victim was with his girlfriend when he parked his vehicle, an Audi Q7, on Maxwell Street,” said Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS.
“The four suspects pounced on them and pointed a firearm at them. One suspect was by the victim and another by the victim’s girlfriend’s side. The victim drew his firearm and fired several shots at the suspect, fatally wounding him in the upper body. He was declared dead on the scene.
The other three suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicle when the victim started shooting.
“Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the victim’s firearm is licensed but the alleged suspect’s firearm had its number filed off, suggesting it could have been an unlicensed firearm,” explained Mtshali.
“A case of attempted hijacking and an inquest docket are under investigation. The deceased’s identity is still unknown.”
