Pomona copper cable thief gets six years behind bars

Thomas Mathebula (51) was sentenced at Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court for malicious damage to property.

Thomas Mathebula (51) was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment at the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on January 29.

Mathebula was sentenced for malicious damage to property after being arrested on April 17, 2018, for trying to steal copper cables on Maluti Street, in Pomona.

“The case was investigated by Det Const Jimmy Mosiamo and this is another breakthrough after several other similar incidents,” said Const Dipuo Ditshego, deputy spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS.

“There have been several cases where the copper cable theft has led to blackouts for the residents. We hope that such convictions will serve as a deterrent to other would-be cable thieves.”
