The man fit the description of a man caught on camera while committing robberies at malls and shopping centres around Kempton Park, Benoni and Midrand.

“The security officers followed the suspect. When noticed he was being followed, he turned back and walked to his car,” said Molokomme.

Before the suspect could take off in his white Mazda 3, the security officers cornered him and prevented him from fleeing the scene.

“The police were called to the scene and upon arrival they searched the suspect and found him in possession of an unlicensed firearm with the serial number filed off,” he continued.

The police searched the suspect’s vehicle and found two pairs of number plates, one magazine and 10 live rounds of ammunition. The suspect’s vehicle was taken to Norkem Park SAPS.

“Further investigations are being done to see if the suspect could be linked to other criminal activities. We suspect he might be linked to armed robberies at Ackermans and other clothing stores,” said Molokomme.

In a statement posted on social media, Elgin Mall management said the suspect was apprehended without any gunshots fired or any other incident.
