Police on duty were alerted to the existence of the firearm by the community. On arrival at the place, the suspect was identified and, upon being searched, he was found in possession of a firearm of which he was unable to explain the origin.
The pistol had two rounds of live ammunition and had its serial number erased. The suspect, 64, was detained at Ivory Park SAPS and was due to appear in Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on Monday or Tuesday where he was expected to answer to a charge of illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The police are already hard at work trying to establish whether the firearm may have been used in the commission of any crimes.
In praising the community, the station head of Ivory Park SAPS, Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo, said: “We wish more people with information on crime, criminality, whereabouts of firearms and any suspected stolen could keep coming forward in order to assist us to make this area safer.”
