Coffins found in storage house for stolen goods in Kempton

A storage house for stolen goods was uncovered in Rhodesfield early on Wednesday morning following the hijacking of a truck en route to Rustenburg.

Seven suspects had been arrested and cargo worth R800 000 had been recovered.

Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni metro police, said a truck carrying an assortment of cargo en route to Rustenburg in the North West Province was hijacked on Wednesday around 2am at the intersection of Brakfontein and R101 roads in Centurion.

EMPD Kempton Park precinct officers received information about the hijacked truck and were able to track it down shortly after 5am on the corner of Gladiator Street and Willow Road in Kempton Park.

The truck was found abandoned with some of its cargo missing.

Kgasago said EMPD Community Liaison Unit members joined the precinct officers and located the house on the corner of Kingfisher and Marauder streets in Rhodesfield at 6.30am, where the stolen cargo was discovered.

“Apparently, the house is used to store stolen goods as a huge quantity of various goods items worth thousands of rands were uncovered. Among the suspected stolen goods were furniture, gas cylinders, lanterns, stationery and coffins.”

The recovered truck was escorted to SAPS Van Ryn Deep pound in Benoni by Kempton Park precinct officers assisted by private security company personnel. A case of the hijacked truck was registered at Wierdabrug Police Station in Centurion.

Seven suspects, aged between 29 and 41, which included three women found at the “storage house”, were arrested. They are all foreign nationals, five Congolese and two Zimbabweans.

They were charged at Kempton Park SAPS with possession of suspected stolen goods.
