One killed in late night attack on worshippers in Esselen Park

A group of about 50 people were praying when the robbers arrived.

Four suspects who robbed a group of worshippers at gunpoint in Esselen Park on February 28 are now wanted for murder, after a man they shot died in hospital on Monday.

According to Capt Lesibana Molokomme, spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, around 50 worshippers were praying in a veld near the Esselen Park RDP houses when the suspects attacked at midnight.

“The victims were instructed to lay on the ground and were robbed of their cellphones, watches and cash,” Molokomme told Express.

During the robbery, one victim was shot and later taken to hospital. The shot would prove to be fatal, as he died in hospital four days later.

“We appeal to anyone with information to come forward,” Molokomme added.

They can contact Det W/O Johan van Wyk on 082 254 4560 or Norkem Park SAPS on 011 391 1814/5.
