A former metro police officer and a Benoni SAPS officer were arrested in Glen Marais during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
This comes after the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI/Hawks) discovered a large quantity of copper and a trailer in the suspects’ possession at the police officer’s home in Dann Road.
“The Hawks have been investigating the case of the copper and trailer that were reported stolen in Alberton in February,” said Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS.
Mtshali said it is also alleged the suspects were using a state-owned vehicle.
“The suspects were also found in possession of a VW Polo that is believed to belong to the Ekurhuleni Central Task Team,” said Mtshali.
“Investigations also led to the discovery of four unlicensed firearms at the home of the former metro officer in Springs.”
According to Mtshali, the copper found is worth millions though he couldn’t confirm an exact figure and the investigations into the case continue.
The suspects will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court for possession of suspected stolen goods and at the Springs Magistrate’s Courts for additional charges of possession of unlicensed firearms.
