As of April 1 the licensing department at the Kempton Park Civic Centre no longer accepts cash as a payment method.
This is according to a notice found at the entrance of the centre.
The notice reads: “Licensing notice to all customers. Please be advised with effect from April 1, 2019, only credit/cheque/savings cards will be accepted as means of payment. NB: No cash allowed at this station.”
A concerned resident, who wished to remain anonymous, informed Express about the notice and felt it was an inconvenience to only accept card payments.
“I arrived at the department on March 26 and saw the notice. When I enquired, I was told the notice was put up on that day,” said the resident.
“I was surprised and felt it was not fair for community members to be treated in that way without any explanation or given enough time to adjust to the change. Not everybody uses bank cards and the municipality needs to accommodate the community.”
The resident also said the cashless system only applied to the licensing department, other services continued to operate as per normal.
Express has since contacted the metro to get more clarity about the notice, but hadn’t received anything at the time of publishing.
