A man (34), apparently looking for a buyer for two rhino horns worth R1.7-million, was arrested on the R21 underneath the Griffiths Road off-ramp bridge on Monday.
The arrest was made by Benoni Flying Squad and the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster task team.
The suspect will face charges of possession of rhino horns in Boksburg Magistrate’s Court, said W/O Grant Giblin, spokesperson for Benoni Flying Squad.
He said it all started around noon when Warrant Officers Renier Dorfling and Francois Jansen and the task team followed up on a suspect who was reported to be in possession of rhino horns, looking for a buyer.
The suspect, driving a grey Toyota bakkie, was followed after being picked up in Benoni next to One Sun Hotel just before 3pm. He was followed to the N12 highway.
Giblin said backup was called and the task team arrived. On the R21 north, underneath the Griffiths Road off-ramp bridge, a thorough search was conducted and two horns, weighing in excess of 2kg, were discovered.
It has not yet been established where the suspect got the rhino horns.
