DA councillor for Ward 15 has resigned

"I am remaining an active member of the DA and will remain active in the ward as a member of the community," said Van Zyl.

DA councillor for Ward 15 (Birchleigh, Van Riebeeck Park and Glen Marais) has resigned.

He will vacate his position on May 31.

“I gave notice of my resignation on March 29 but wanted to first assist the DA in the 2019 national election before vacating my position,” Gideon van Zyl said on Monday.

“This was not an easy decision to make. It was in fact the most difficult decision I had to make in my life, and therefore have not taken it lightly.

“There are several things that brought me to this point, but it primarily had to do with the fact that I need to re-establish my focus on my family, my professional career in service management and my studies,” he added.

“It has been an honour to serve this community and we have achieved so many things together. Some of the tangible things we achieved were various road resurfacing projects (Elgin Road, Rietfontein Road and Soutpansberg Drive); improvement of two parks with eco gyms, new children’s play equipment and footpaths; and footpaths established for nurses and workers going to the old age homes next to Stefanus Road.”
Van Zyl said several other projects are still running in the ward:

Rietvlei environmental park: the establishment of this park next to Soutpansberg Drive in Van Riebeeck Park is underway and will continue into the next financial year.

Upgrading of Blue Gill Dam to improve storm water down flow.

Upgrade of the park on Avocet Avenue in Van Riebeeck Park with an eco gym and children’s play equipment.

Clr Tracey Lourenco will stand in for council issues in Van Riebeeck Park and Clr Jaco Terblanche for Birchleigh and Glen Marais.

A candidate selection process has been started by the DA for a candidate for the ward.

“I am remaining an active member of the DA and will remain active in the ward as a member of the community,” said Van Zyl.
