Kempton SPCA manager and assistant robbed on R21 while taking care of horses

The suspects fired a shot while they were searching Shadrack Baloyi and Kira Sparrow.

Two staff members of Kempton Park SPCA were held at gunpoint while on duty on the R21 near Oakmoor Station on Thursday night.

The incident that left both manager Kira Sparrow and assistant Shadrack Baloyi shaken, happened around 6.30pm.

Their personal belongings were taken during the incident.

“We received a call about five horses on the R21 and when we arrived, we directed them off the highway into the nearest open field along Pretoria Road,” said Sparrow on Friday morning.

“Once they were safely off the road, we returned to our car that was parked on the R21. Our plan was to drive to Pretoria Road to ensure the horses were fine. While walking back to the car, two armed men approached us.”

Sparrow said they instructed them not to make eye contact.

“They kept shouting don’t look at me, don’t look at me. I tried to explain who we were and why we were in the field, but they repeatedly told us not to look at them.

“They took both our personal cellphones and the society’s emergency phone. They took Shadrack’s wallet and gave it back to him after taking money from it.

“I realised my driver’s licence was in my phone pouch and pleaded with them to give me my licence, which they did.”

The suspects fired a shot while searching Baloyi and Sparrow.

“While busy with us, a man walked by along a little path. One of the men uttered something to him and told his accomplice to shoot him,” explained Sparrow.

“They fired a shot at him and he ran away. I don’t think he was hit, but they definitely fired a shot which scared him away.”

This was the second attack on SPCA staff in one week. Midrand SPCA experienced an armed robbery on July 10.

Sparrow visited Midrand SPCA earlier on Thursday to offer support.

“After the visit, I had a meeting with my staff, telling them to be alert and vigilant at all times and to be careful of who enters our offices. A few hours later, Shadrack and I were attacked. “We are still a bit shaken.”Sparrow said operation at the Kempton Park SPCA offices had not been affected.
