The empty van was recovered in Bredell hours later

A hijacked panel van was recovered in Bredell on Friday morning with cargo of cigarettes valued at R400 000 missing.

Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesperson, said the white Mercedes Benz van was hijacked at 7.30am on N12 near Zuurbekom in the West Rand.

“It is allegedly four vehicles, two Audis, a Toyota Hilux and a Toyota Quantum, all white, accosted the Merc panel van driver armed with rifles and handguns.

“The panel van was recovered around 10.40am on Ninth Road. The tracking device was removed and jammed as it was found near the abandoned, empty van,” said Kgasago.

Although the driver’s personal belongings and cash were taken, he was not harmed.
