Top metro management on board to resolve waste problems

Most backlogs should be cleared over the weekend

Top management at the city of Ekurhuleni have put their weight behind solving the refuse removal problems in Kempton Park.

According to Kempton Park DA ward councillors, the mayor, city manager and acting chief operations officers are all helping to resolve the ongoing lack of waste removal.

These councillors had a lengthy meeting with the member of the mayoral committee and head of the department for environmental and waste management on Thursday.

“We asked many pertinent questions and received positive feedback.

“One of the main issues identified is the large number of waste removal trucks standing in workshops for lengthy periods of time. This is now being addressed at the highest level to expedite speedy repairs in order to get all trucks back on the road as soon as possible.

“There is a good possibility that scheduled services may return to normal within the next week.

“We as DA councillors have asked for comprehensive reports going forward, as well as effective daily communication addressing all backlogs and contingency plans for us to be able to inform our communities efficiently and effectively.

“We will be monitoring it every day and endeavour to pursue this crisis with vigour until all waste removal services are back to normal as soon as possible,” they said.

The current backlogs should be cleared over the weekend, with the outstanding Monday and Tuesday sites being serviced as per the refuse removal calendar next week.
