The EMPD Specialised Task Team Unit members cornered and arrested two found fiddling with the registration plates of a hired silver Mercedes-Benz sedan in Esangweni Section on Friday.
According to EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng, the two male suspects who were standing outside the German make, attempting to exchange original registration plates displayed on the vehicle, ran in different directions when they spotted EMPD officers closing in, leaving behind two other males, 32 and 35 years of age.
“One of the arrested suspects has a pending case of possession of unlicensed firearm registered at Atteridgeville Police Station. The sedan, hired from a car rental company Pomona, Kempton Park, was thoroughly searched. Police recovered a bag containing one cellphone, three 9mm pistols with serial numbers tampered with and 22 live rounds. Two false registration plates were also confiscated,” said Mokheseng.
The pair were taken to Tembisa Police Station and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms with ammunition and tampering with registration plates of a motor vehicle.
They will appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon. The hunt for the two other suspects continues.
