Kaalfontein residents take to streets about illegal connections

We have no choice but to take our anger to the streets until someone, somewhere comes here to listen to our concerns

Traffic came to a standstill on Friday morning as Kaalfontein residents took to the streets to protest against illegal electricity connections.

Local residents claimed to have reported this matter to their ward councillor but with little success, hence the decision to embark on the protest.

“We have no choice but to take our anger to the streets until someone, somewhere comes here to listen to our concerns.

Residents blocked street by burning trash and tyres.

“We have been reporting this matter to our councillor but without help. We are told that we must go to the office of Mayor Herman Mashaba, but we don’t know who Mashaba is.

“The only person we know is our ward councillor because we voted for him,” said Elmon Mokoena, one of the protesters.”

The residents said there were a number of people, including foreign nationals, who connected electricity illegally and this affected them because they ended up paying huge bills.

“These people actually steal electricity from us and no one is prepared to listen to us. We are not going to stop barricading the streets if we are not listened to. Next week, we are going to shut down the entire township,” continued Mokoena.
