Man sentenced to 10 years in prison for axe assault

The man hid the axe in a schoolbag before going to his ex-girlfriend's house.

An Ivory Park man will spend the next 10 years behind bars for attempted murder after he had attacked his ex-girlfriend with an axe.

Lucky Cossam Dumani (35) was found guilty in Tembisa Magistrate’s Court for the attempted murder of his girlfriend in December last year.

Dumani visited the ex-girlfriend, ostensibly to borrow money, but it turned out that the visit was laced with some ulterior motives, said Capt Bernard Matimulane, spokesperson for Ivory Park SAPS.

“The two ended up in an argument after which he left, only to come back later with a schoolbag containing an axe. He assaulted the victim and took out the axe, hitting her on the head with it three times.”

Dumani, who had been in jail since he was arrested at the end of January this year, was denied bail as he was in the country illegally.

“Domestic violence-related crimes are occurring too much in our country and we believe this sentence will send a message to Dumani and his like that this kind of behaviour is unacceptable. My officers are prepared to go all out to ensure perpetrators are brought to book,” said Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo, the station commander of Ivory Park SAPS.

He also commended the investigating officer involved, as he has only been in the investigating field for a year.

“With such dedicated young and committed colleagues, the future of detection looks bright,” Ngcobo added.
