An officer of Kempton Park SAPS Rapid Railway Unit was due to appear in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on October 4 on three charges.
The charges are assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, pointing of a firearm and discharging a firearm in a public place.
Sgt Johanna Madiga, spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, said the charges were laid against the officer after an alleged incident on Wednesday last week.
“It is alleged the officer was at a tavern on Pongola River Drive in Norkem Park when an argument ensued which led to a fight,” said Madiga.
“The fight allegedly involved two women and another male. One of the three victims was allegedly hit over the head with a beer bottle by the officer. The fight continued and the officer ran to his home and returned with his firearm.”
The officer allegedly fired three shots next to the victims, collected the cartridges and fled the scene.
“The officer allegedly went for medical attention, but when he went to the police station the following day to open charges of assault, he was arrested,” said Madiga.
“The 40-year-old officer’s firearm was confiscated and he was detained at Kempton Park Police Station holding cells pending his appearance in court.”
The case was also reported to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
