Murder suspect on ‘community’s radar’ hands himself over to Ivory Park SAPS

The man was allegedly killed after asking about a commotion in one of the back rooms.

An Ivory Park man will appear in Tembisa Magistrate’s Court to face a charge of murder after allegedly stabbing a man in his thirties at his home two weeks ago.

The man was allegedly killed after asking about a commotion in one of the back rooms.

The suspect, who was known by the witnesses who were present when he allegedly stabbed the victim, had been on the run since the incident.

Capt Bernard Matimulane, spokesperson for Ivory Park SAPS, said thanks to the excellent working relationship between the witnesses and the investigating officer, the pressure piled up on the suspect, who decided to surrender to the police.

“On the night in question, the suspect allegedly arrived with five people at the place where the victim stayed. One of the people was looking for his younger sister, who was apparently seeing someone at the property.

“The suspect felt he and the people he was with were being disrespected by the man who he allegedly stabbed twice. The suspect allegedly stabbed the man in front of witnesses and fled the scene on foot.”

Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo, station commander of Ivory Park SAPS, welcomed the arrest and thanked the investigating officer and the witnesses who not only gave statements, but also kept the police abreast of the fugitive’s moves.

Ngcobo thought it must have dawned on the suspect that he was not only on the police’s radar, but also on his neighbours’ and other witnesses.

“With the high levels of violent crimes, Ivory Park can do well with witnesses and members of the community who are always willing to help the police when they are needed most. If people can adopt this attitude to crime, crimes can be easily dealt with,” said Ngcobo.
