Pomona Road hitch-hiking ends in armed robbery

The victim alleges that when she refused sexual favours, the suspect drew a firearm

A 29-year-old woman jumped out of a moving vehicle to escape an alleged sexual assault on October 17.

The incident is alleged to have occurred along Pomona Road after the victim accepted a lift from a man driving a bakkie.

According to Sgt Dipuo Ditshego, deputy spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, trouble began when the man asked for sexual favours from the victim along the way.

“The victim alleges that when she refused these favours, the suspect drew a firearm and wanted to take her handbag,” said Ditshego.

“A struggle ensued and the victim then jumped out of the moving vehicle. The suspect drove off with the victim’s handbag which had cash amounting to R4 500 in it, among other things.”

Ditshego said the victim was assisted by another motorist who stopped shortly after the incident and transported her to Kempton Park Police Station.

The victim sustained minor injuries and a case of armed robbery is being investigated.

Station commander Brig Samuel Maredi once again warns community members, especially women, about hitch-hiking as they might become victims of sexual abuse and have their belongings robbed.
