Two suspects were arrested in Festival Mall’s parking area after being found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on Wednesday last week.
This came after bank investigators following a lead from Brakpan.
“It is alleged the investigators noticed a suspicious-looking man at Carnival Mall and they approached him,” said Sgt Dipuo Ditshego, deputy spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS.

“When they confronted him, he directed them to a silver VW Polo that was parked at the mall. He said there were two occupants in the vehicle that were allegedly known for robberies. The investigators decided to follow the vehicle when it left the mall.”
On their way they called different units for backup and when the vehicle stopped at Festival Mall, they approached it.
“When they searched the two men in the car, they discovered two firearms with the serial numbers filed off,” said Ditshego.
“The suspects were also found with ammunition and the vehicle was impounded for further investigation. Police say this is a breakthrough as it is suspected that the suspects were intending to commit crimes, such as robberies and house robberies.”
Ditshego also said investigations would establish whether the two firearms could be linked to other crimes.
The suspects, aged 26 and 40, were arrested by the specialised unit and were detained at Kempton Park Police Station pending their appearances in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.
