Taxi driver describes late-night hijacking in Kempton Park West

The suspects took bank cards and two phones, left Mkonto behind and drove off with his vehicle

What should have been just another pick-up for an e-hailing taxi driver from Norkem Park became a nightmare when his client hijacked him in October.

Vusi Mkonto spoke to Express following an article in the newspaper where police were looking for three suspects involved in the hijacking of e-hailing taxi drivers in the city.

According to the father of two, he was hijacked in Kempton Park West on the night of October 13 around 9.30pm after the two suspects requested a ride on the e-hailing service app.

According to Mkonto the suspects did not look like criminals.

“Unsuspecting, I picked up the two men in Norkem Park and when we reached their destination, both pointed firearms at me. One was sitting in the front passenger seat and the other in the back,” said Mkonto.

The suspects ordered the victim to drive to a bush in Kempton Park West.

“They took me out of the car and forced me to the ground where they repeatedly beat me. The two men searched for the tracker in my car and took it once they found it,”explained Mkonto.

The suspects took bank cards and two phones, left Mkonto behind and drove off with his vehicle.

Mkonto sustained minor injuries. “I still feel pain but luckily I was not badly hurt,” said Mkonto.

The husband and father, who is the breadwinner of the family, said since the incident he had been having sleepless nights as this was the first time it ever happened to him.

The car, a BMW 3 series with registration number BH 62 RM GP, has not been found and was reported stolen at Sebenza Police Station.

A case of hijacking was opened and police are now looking for two men in connection with the hijacking.
