The City of Ekurhuleni will appear before the parliamentary committee on co-operative governance and traditional affairs (COGTA) on December 3 to answer questions regarding the Glen Marais substation fire in June.
As a result of the fire, many Kemptonians were left without electricity for seven days.
The portfolio committee requested the City of Ekurhuleni to “brief it on the fire incident and its aftermath”.
The City was called to Parliament following a petition submitted by Mike Waters MP, and DA constituency head of Kempvale.

Kempton Express reported in June that Waters handed in a petition to Parliament on June 27 regarding the unacceptable high number of electricity outages in Kempton Park.
“We are calling on the portfolio committee on co-operative governance and traditional affairs (COGTA) to investigate the matter and to call Ekurhuleni metro before the portfolio committee,” Waters said at the time.
According to him the electricity crisis in the City of Ekurhuleni is much worse than originally feared, with infrastructure crumbling due to a lack of maintenance.
“The silence of the mayor, Mzwandile Masina, and the two members of the mayoral committee responsible for electricity, water, sanitation and energy, Tisetso Nketle and infrastructure services Masele Madihlaba, had been deafening and was indicative of the uncaring ANC-led administration,” Waters said at the time, referring to the prolonged outage after the fire at the Glen Marais substation.
