Robbers flee as business owner pulls out steel rod

They stormed into the supermarket and demanded cigarettes and cash

Members of the EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit made their presence felt on Wednesday at 9.30am at the corner of Long Street and Margaret Avenue in Kempton Park CBD.

Officers on patrol noticed two suspicious-looking males running away from a supermarket on the corner of Long Street and Margaret Avenue.

Officers gave chase on foot and a 27-year-old male was cornered and restrained on Long Street. The other suspect managed to evade arrest.

According to the shop owner, the two suspects, in possession of what looked like a toy gun, stormed into the supermarket and demanded cigarettes and cash. The shop owner, however, took out a steel rod from under the counter.

The suspects then retreated.

It is believed the suspect who got away was the one in possession of the weapon.

As EMPD officers arrived with the caught suspect at Kempton Park Police Station, they found the shop owner opening a case of attempted business robbery.

“We delivered the suspect to the police and he slept in the cells. The police will now takeover,” said EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng.
