E-hailing cab driver arrested following alleged rape at Vusimuzi

A Norkem Park resident was allegedly drugged and raped in Vusimuzi informal settlement hours after ushering in the new year.

A 34-year-old Norkem Park woman was allegedly drugged and raped by an e-hailing taxi driver at Vusimuzi informal settlement at dawn on New Year’s Day.

This comes after the victim requested a ride on the app after ushering in the new year at a tavern in Birch Acres.

“The victim alleged she intended on going to her home in Norkem Park when the cab arrived,” said Sgt Johanna Madiga, spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS.

“While on the way, she asked the driver to pass by a fast food restaurant before taking her home. She alleged they went to two different fast food outlets as she wanted something to eat.”

The victim passed out in the vehicle after allegedly being drugged by the driver.

“Upon arrival at the informal settlement, the victim said she was dragged inside a shack where she was forcibly undressed and raped twice by the driver. The suspect then drove the victim to her home in Norkem Park and left.”

The victim later reported the incident at the police station.

Madiga said the driver was arrested the following day after a trap was set for him. The matter will be handled by Tembisa South SAPS as the crime occurred in Tembisa.
