Immigration official at OR Tambo nabbed in sting over R100 000 ‘bribe’

Langa remains in custody until his next court appearance on Wednesday.

Sam Jan Langa (52), an immigration official of the Department of Home Affairs national office appeared in Kempton Park Regional Court on Monday on charges of corruption, extortion and defeating the ends of justice.

Brig Vishnu Naidoo, police spokesperson, said Langa allegedly demanded over R100 000 from a foreign businessman. In exchange Langa would ensure that the businessman and other foreigners would not be deported back to their country of origin.

“The matter was referred to the National Cold Case Investigation Team for investigation. At about 5.40pm on January 9, Langa was arrested during a sting operation at OR Tambo International Airport’s departure terminal after allegedly accepting the ‘bribe money’,” said Naidoo.

Langa remains in custody until his next court appearance on Wednesday.
