Woman abandons newborn baby at West Street salon

She claimed she needed to go to the toilet before she disappeared.

A baby girl was abandoned at a salon on West Street on Sunday afternoon after the woman who was with her simply disappeared.

Kempton Park SAPS is currently investigating a case of ill treatment or neglect of a child.

According to Kempton Park SAPS spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, a woman entered the salon around 4pm, carrying a baby.

“While there, she asked one of the women present to hold the baby as she wanted to rush to the bathroom. She never came back,” said Mtshali.

The baby was taken to Kempton Park Police Social Crime Prevention officers on Monday, who took the child to a doctor to be examined. The baby is believed to be about four days old as the umbilical cord was still attached.

She is currently in the care of child welfare.

Police appeal to anyone with information about the whereabouts of the mother of the baby, or family, to call Capt Jane Mnyakeni on 071 111 4178.
