‘We want blood for blood,’ residents say after girlfriend’s death

'We want to start with this one and make an example of him'

Angry community members are baying for the blood of murder accused Derrick Khoza, who is accused of killing his girlfriend, Lorna Shivhambu.

The community and different political parties, particularly the ANC and the EFF, packed Tembisa Magistrate’s on Thursday, where Khoza made his first court appearance.

Khoza was denied bail and will make his second appearance on February 28.

Mostly dressed in black as a sign of solidarity and support to Shivhambu’s family, members of the community demonstrated outside the court’s premises and threatened to take the law into their own hands.

“No bail, no bail,” they shouted.

“No, actually we would love for him to get bail, so we can teach him and all the women abusers what we are all about. We are sick and tired of this. We want blood for blood. We want to start with this one and make an example of him. In jail, he will be living a lavish life, using our tax money. And this will be too easy for him and all the women killers,” said a member of the ANC women’s league outside the court.

Women demonstrate outside the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court during Derrick Khoza’s bail hearing.

The EFF weighed in on this topic and also used this platform to send a strong message to women abusers.

“This has been happening for a very long time and we have been silent, thinking that men would change. What is more painful and frustrating is the fact that the courts are failing us. I can promise you that next week this time, the suspect will be roaming the streets and enjoying his freedom and this will only bring the family of that young woman more pain. I really don’t blame those who are calling for harsher punishment here, because there are so many similar cases being thrown out of courts,” said the EFF’s Ward 9 chairperson, Meisie Bowale.

The 21-year-old’s body was discovered last week Monday, after she had been missing.

Her family became suspicious and worried after she failed to pitch for work at her mother’s hair and beauty salon.

The family and friends suspect that Shivhambu might have been poisoned, allegations that will only be confirmed by the police after a postmortem has been done.

“She was a good child with a bright future ahead and it is so sad that her life, which was just beginning had to end in this tragic manner.

“Why didn’t he just let her live? Our hearts are so heavy. Our wish is for him to rot in jail. We want justice, and not just for our daughter but for all the women who have been turned into punching bags. As a family, we still don’t understand why she had to be killed like that,” said Shivambu’s aunt Thami Shivambu.
