A man (26) was arrested for assault after he allegedly battered a mother of a seven-month-old baby with a blunt object on Korhaan Avenue on Tuesday.
Norkem Park SAPS spokesperson Sgt Johanna Madiga said: “The victim was taken to Tembisa Hospital and the suspect had been arrested on charges of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm and domestic violence.”

“The suspect alleged an argument began when the mother of the child apparently told him he was not the father of the baby,” said Madiga.
According to a neighbour, the argument between the suspect and victim started two days earlier.
The neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said they heard a racket coming from the house and the baby crying since Sunday night.
“On Tuesday, we were working outside and my husband again heard shouting and the baby crying. He called me to go look to see what was going on. That was when the victim peered over our wall covered in blood with her baby in her arms, screaming for help,” the neighbour said.
The neighbour’s husband grabbed a ladder to help the mother and baby over the wall. They then contacted emergency services.
“We covered her with a blanket and saw a deep gash on the side of her head. She told us how the suspect hit her with a speaker from behind while she was holding her child.”
The suspect had been transferred from Norkem Park SAPS to the Kempton Park SAPS holding cells.
