Five suspects arrested for being in possession of alleged stolen vehicle

Five men were arrested for being in possession of a stolen North West vehicle.

Members of Tactical Response Team from the Ekurhuleni North District, who were deployed in the Ivory Park policing precinct, have arrested five suspects found in possession of a hijacked vehicle on January 29.The team also intercepted some criminal activities that the group was planning to commit on the day.

Acting on information the team managed to locate and arrest the five, whose ages range from 21 to 50, next to the Busy Corner Mall in Ebony Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Ivory Park SAPS communications officer Bernard Matimulane said the vehicle in which the group was travelling in was found to have been hijacked in Phokeng, North West Province, and has been fitted with false registration numbers to disguise its true identity and origin.

“The group has been arrested for possession of a hijacked motor vehicle and is currently in the Ivory Park police cells pending their appearance in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court. In the meantime, details surrounding their motives and the nature of criminal activity they were planning will be thoroughly investigated,” said Matimulane.

Their cellphones have been confiscated as part of ongoing investigations.

Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo, the station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, has welcomed this arrest and has commended the police officers for pursuing information given to them up until it led them to the suspects, and the subsequent recovery of the car.

“The fact that the vehicle has only been found now, with false registration number plates, clearly shows us what kind of people we are dealing with. They are not afraid to tamper with the evidence to disguise their evil intentions,” said Ngcobo.
