Motorists are urged to avoid the P91 and Oranjerivier Drive following a cash-in-transit heist around 7pm on Monday evening.
The police, metro police, emergency services and private security companies are on the scene.
A critically wounded person was airlifted from the scene around 8pm.
Kempton Express spoke to an eyewitness on the scene who said he was walking in the area when he heard the gunshots. At first he did not know what was happening but as he got closer, he saw an armed man running to the van, firing a shot through a little hole in the window of the CIT van.
Two explosions then followed in quick succession after which some of the robbers got into the back of the van and grabbed the money. They escaped in two vehicles, firing shots randomly.
As the robbers escaped, the witness and another man ran to the van and saw one of the officers was wounded. Two others were unharmed.
He described the robbery as very professional as the road was blocked off before the robbery and it took the 15-20 robbers about 10 minutes to get in and out.
According to him the police were quickly on the scene.
Norkem Park SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Johanna Madiga, said the suspects were still on the run, some on foot and others in vehicles, going towards Birch Acres. She warned that the criminals were heavily armed.
